This feels like the 19th century literary version of standup: He's not telling a story for the sake of the story, he's telling it for the sake of the funny asides. So far about 10% (if that) of the book is about the boat trip, and the rest are the anecdotes that the boat trip brought to mind for the fictional narrator. It's fun once you know that's what you're in for. :)
