Brigham was more of a local man. And hated the formalities of government.

Brigham struggled with separating church and state which upset some. He claimed the priesthood helped him make great decisions within government. It seems those that were kind to him, he was kind back. And if they didn’t, he was hard to deal with

ok so he literally thought white was the superior race and he was “helping” the native Americans by trying to force them to become “civilized”

ok so he genuinely thought he was above the natives & was his duty to “convert” them bc they were uncivilized and not Mormon

Brigham Young was brilliant at rapidly spreading the colonization of Mormons in order to gain leverage over those persecuting them. When you are economically or financially dependent on someone else, you are literally giving them all the leverage and all the power if you become financially independent, they have no power. And you have freedom. Wonder if polygamy fits into here somewhere
