I am in awe of how much research must have gone into this. I don’t know if Weir has a scientific background prior to The Martian, but even a base knowledge from that research must help. My understanding of the biology is pretty good but my physics is lacking, so I have to assume it’s as accurate and well-thought out as the biology!
Much as I loved the movie, it did Stratt a disservice.

While Grace’s ability to communicate with Rocky seems a little too good given the entirely different evolution of even their phonics, I have to give Weir a lot of credit for actually tackling the alien language thing, instead of just giving Rocky some magic universal translator device.

And I do want some explanation of how the Eridian ecosystem, which receives exactly zero EMR, can have producers, or at least organisms at the base of the food web.
