If you had a child who always wondered off and got lost and your neighbors were constantly bringing the child home, wouldn’t you, I don’t know, get a full time babysitter for the child if you were unable to watch them? If you could afford it I mean? It’s odd to me that the dad is so worried he’s searching for the kid overnight, but the child is never scolded or watched properly.

And don’t get me STARTED on how STUPID Toad is. He escaped from prison and doesn’t expect the authorities to look for him at his own home? And he had no plan on how to get there or expect to be a fugitive on the run? I want him to crash his own big red car (not one he steals) straight into a big tree and finally LEARN a lesson. Oh I hate that character SO MUCH. Rich and narcissistic.

Life is too short for a horrible book like this one. Ranting review to come when I have the time. I would like to dig DEEP into this one. 6/9/26

I can’t feel sorry for Toad since everyone else since to think it’s just fine to aid and abet a prisoner to escape. Especially since he’s a jerk and did it to himself. Also, are some animals “awakened” with human sizing, ability to talk and think/reason and some aren’t? Cuz humans are present too, but some canaries are in cages. Human sized birds in large cages or regular birds? Bad world building.

Why are the ONLY two female characters in this book so far both UNNAMED (the jailer’s daughter and her aunt the washerwoman) so stupid and venal?! The daughter felt bad for Toad so she worked out with her aunt how to help him escape prison!! He DESERVES to be there!! He’s a self-centered idiot who is going to kill someone with his purposefully aggressive driving!! I can’t EVEN!

Toad should have been a donkey, cuz he’s an @ss. He is in prison for 20 years for what he did and he’s all proud of what he did and doesn’t understand the severity of it at all. Idiot!

Ummm…what the absolute HECK?!? This is NOT a kid’s book at ALL! Toad is addicted to driving and he does it poorly. He gets an almost God-complex, smashed up SEVEN cars and was in the hospital three times from it, so his friends staged an intervention. He escaped and STOLE A CAR, then got 20 years for all of his infractions, the new chapter, we forget about him and move on to a missing child!! What IS this?!?

Started to fall asleep while listening to this. I was driving at the time, so had to pause it. It’s not bad, as another reviewer mentioned, it’s all vibe, but it plus the drive had a soporific effect on me.

If you had just told him the TRUTH instead of HIDING how dangerous it was, he would have KNOWN better than to enter the Wild Wood by HIMSELF in the dead of WINTER! Not giving people ALL of the information to “protect” them NEVER WORKS. KNOWLEDGE is power, NOT ignorance! Star, dropped!
