Lingard is a lot like Jim in Lord Jim; he has Romantic notions he himself doesn't understand. Because he is unselfaware, he betrays his adopted family, Hassim and Immada (I can see it coming) for some white folks who regard him as an inferior. In other words, Lingard thinks he is free but mentally he is not.


I've published a lot of academic researxh on Conrad, though this is my first read of The Rescue.
