I have to say, it feels like I am reading a different author. From his first to his last books, we went from descriptive lushness to stark minimalism. I wonder if we all change that much and don't fully realize unless we are very self-aware. He has a real handle on the primitive brain throughout his lifespan...but the travels are wildly different.
