Welp, I’m going in. Not sure why I have the sudden urge to reread this, especially since 1,100 page books aren’t really compatible with my shit attention span these days, but considering it’s been about 27 years since my first go round, I figure a revisit to Derry is due (as that’s about how often IT returns).

Thanks oddo! I’ve picked this up a few times over the years to reread, but always changed my mind after remembering a couple horrifying scenes that will never leave me (one involving that Hockstetter bully and animals). But it’s time.

Kurt Reichenbaugh You got a lot of "Beep Beep Richie" ahead of you.

Char The 40th anniversary of It's release is this September! I was invited to write an essay about it for a book called Stil Floating: Forty Years of Pennywise. It will be released this September. Can you believe it's been that long?

I can’t not picture Seth Green in the role either. Even though it’s been decades since I saw the TV miniseries.

No, and I can’t believe it’s been over 35 since the miniseries came out either. I first attempted IT not too long after seeing that on TV and becoming obsessed, but considering I was only 12 I didn’t get very far (though I was already into King a bit back then).

Congrats on the essay! I’ll be sure to check that out.

Phil Good luck Jack! I read this (I think) over 30 years ago...

Mike Spring semester of sophomore year of high school for me, which means spring of '02. Which means 24 years. Checking my records, I see it (or It) sandwiched between The Great Gatsby and The Long Hard Road Out of Hell by Marilyn Manson. Sounds about right. And yeah, I thought nothing of picking up a 1,100 page book back then. My attention span is suffering, too. It's good that you're fighting it. Though I haven't been drawn back to this one the way I have to Salem's Lot, to be honest.

Jordan West Good luck! At the risk of losing my moderate street cred I've never read this, not even during my middle school King phase (although I do recall a teacher saying that this book convinced him Steve was 'a sick cookie' and am now pretty sure which part upset him); do have a copy I picked up at least 15 years might try digging out, but I don't know, unless its totally off the wall the whole 'an ancient evil arises in a small town' scenario onlyever did so much for me.

Thanks Phil! So far I’ve been blowing through it (about 350 pages in, which is fast for me), so it may not take me a month to read after all.

Salem’s Lot is probably my all time favorite King novel, and it might just be my next reread.

I think what elevates this from the typical “ancient evil in small town” story is the weird, unknowable cosmic element to it. I never found “that part” (the gangbang) too disturbing. I mean, what the hell was King thinking, but it wasn’t really descriptive as far as I could recall. My only apprehension about rereading this is due to a couple sections dealing with extreme animal abuse, and I have vague recollections of child sexual abuse, though that may have just been inferred (I’m not one to skim, but I do tend to speed through sections like that).

Mine too. I reread it a few years ago, and that cemented it for me. Was thinking about going back to it this October, too.

Jayakrishnan You might actually end up loving this experience. I read it when I was 15 and it is one of my favorite King novels. The sheer amount of back stories and history for the Clown is amazing.
