You are not self inserting yourself as main character like most webnovel readers do. That is what makes LOTM enjoyable as Klien does not make stupid mistakes and has backup plans.

All the other characters have great personality. I have been given nothing to like about Klien, his plans lack any stakes because he’s divined the answer, and the story trips over itself to give him everything he needs.
This really feels like a fanfic of a story with a really interesting world, filled with really interesting characters, and someone wrote their OC into it. Definitely not my taste
It sucks for me because there are elements I like (including the fool) but Klein is the worst part for me
It's fair to criticize Klein early on - cuttlefish can be inefficient at times in giving character moments for him that is poignant towards exploring his pysche. That's partly why he can come off as self insert at times. But also a lot of Klein's characterization is intentionally implicit because it's tied to later revelation. His "ordinary/ bland " personality is what makes him even better in the second half of the novel.
Trust me on this—Klein is one of the best characters in the novel and easily one of its strongest aspects.
As for when you start getting rich, detailed character work from him, it’s really from Volume 4 onward. Especially Vol 5–8, where you truly begin to see the vision behind his character—why he acts the way he does and the ideas driving him.
His exploration of identity, fate, humanity, and empathy becomes genuinely endearing by the end, his development and journey one of the best I have ever seen.
But yeah, you do have to be patient with it. You liked the ending of Volume 1, right? Trust me, there are moments like that and even far better ones—in the second half of the novel that challenges klein psychologically
