Catch me gasping for breath halfway through this chapter *(It's this whole part: "Life on Pepper Street was peaceful and easy because its responsibilites lay elsewhere; its very paving had been laid down by men now far away, planned by someone in an office building even Mr. Desmond had not seen. (...) their lives were quietly governed for them by a mysterious, faraway force ...." etc etc.)

nobody writes nasty women like Shirley Jackson meanwhile she never makes you forget the man are effortlessly dangerous and scary. as in: okay, the dog snarling behind the fence feels evil but there's someone whose fence it is who sees nothing wrong with locking up a living creature quietly eating breakfast. So who really holds the power, who do we really need to look out for then, or, in this essay I - etc
