I feel a change come over myself when I am reading this. I tried to describe it to a friend the other day and got only as far as some topical details concerning the plot, but what I did not manage to say was: when I open the book, it’s as if I get a window into the very real life of Levin, Anna, and Oblonsky etc. and it is a solid thing which exists independent of my reading and is merely suspended until I return.
