only read the first short story, “The Fourteenth Ward”, this story is a great prelude to the Tropic of Cancer. It explores Henry’s early life in Brooklyn, and personifies how he views the world, and why he focuses heavily on viewing a scene, like a painting, in the novel. His metaphor for the Brooklyn bridge, intertwined with Rob Ramsey’s Suicide, shapes the title that is ‘Black Spring’.
