The lion ask if they will obey him if he kills their enemy. He asks if there are other lions but they say no because the spider killed them. The lion bravely walks over and the spider is sleeping. He notices its slender neck and goes after its weak spot with his paws. He lops off its head and he waits until the legs stop wiggling. The animals bow to the lion who promises to return after he deilivers Dorothy.

They walk untill tired. The tinman and scarecrow stand watch over others while they sleep. In the morning they hear growling and wild noixes. They walk down the road and find a group of the wildest of wildest animals meeting. When they see the lion, they hush and ask if he will be their king. They need a leader to fight a strong enemy that sounds like Shelob or Aragog.

Ch. 21 They have to cross bogs and swamps with rank grass and mire after they jump down from the wall. It is a hard slog, but eventually they make it to firm ground that led to an old forest with the tallest, most ancient trees. The ground has a thick cover of dead leaves and the trees have a thick layer of moss. The only one who likes it is the lion. He would love to live in a place like this.

She yells at them and Dorothy apologizes. Then she goes to get mended. They see a princess who runs and Dorothy tells her she won’t hurt her. If she runs and fall, she will needed to be mended and they are not as pretty after that. They see a clown who has fallen so many times that he is covered in cracks, but he doesn’t care. He gets them mended but the cracks are seen. Dorothy asks the princess to go to Kansas.

The people and even their clothing is made of china and painted brlightly: milkdmaids, shepherds, shepherdesses, princes, princesses, farmers. None are taller than Dorothy’s knees, so everything is in a miniature scale. The scarecrow jump first. One by one, they land on him to avoid breaking anything. A frightened cow kicks a bucket, broke its leg and the pail, and nicked the milkmaid’s elbow. She’s ticked off.

Ch. 20 Dorothy, Toto, and the lion are tired so they sleep while the tinman builds the ladder. It is awkward but it works.The scarecrow goes first and Dorothy helps keep him from falling off the ladder. They climb to the top and sit on the edge, one by one, and exlaim, ‘Oh, my!” Everything in the land is china, painted with bright colors. The round is a big china plate. Fragile! Barns, homes, animals are all china.

They have no problems continuing south until they reach a tall wall made out of white china. The tinman says that he will build a ladder so they can climb over it.

The trees are very close together. The scarecrow finds a way in and a tall tree windes him up like a toy and throws him. He’s not hurt so he looks for an opening and the same thing happens. Then the tinman shoulders his ax and tries. The tree responds the same way but then thewoodman shops off the branch holding him and the tree reacts as if in pain. They sneak through. After passing through, they an travel freely.

They head south and the walk is pleasant. The lion especially enjoys the outdoors for living indoors has made him soft. He is excited to showoff his courage. They look back at the city and talk about how thyankful they are for Oz, even if he was a bad wizard. Dorothy forgives hiim anyway. The fields are green with lush flowers. That night they sleep in the grass. They come to a thick wood that they cannot get around.

Ch. 19 Fighting trees? Um, Middle Earth? Narnia? Did Jack and Tollers conspire to make better Oz stories? They bid farewell to the guardian of the gate. He’s sad to see them go and reminds the scarecrow that he is their ruler now. He promises to come back if it is possible. Dorothy thanks him for the wonderful hospitality of the Emerald City. He wishes Dorothy well and understands why she has to go.
