I may be a hypocrite on this, but while in historical novels it is common for royals forced into arranged marriages to have their mistresses and lovers that are well accepted into these strange arrangements, I’m unhappy that this *romantic* fantasy had devolved into ppl having spouses and consorts and matches - and they are not the same person. It kinda kills the “romantic” in this, no matter the excuses

I loved Acker in book 1, but in this book he comes across as a pushover: married to a woman he doesn’t love, blindly following orders from a tyrant. In 4 yrs it didn’t occur to him to investigate Jovie’s accusations against his father? Is he deft?
