I enjoyed this book for how uncomfortably realistic it told a story of Chinese people making decisions in life that I have 100% seen real people have done. There is an uneasy truth to how mental illnesses are blamed on or explained with esoteric knowledge, and the way the narration sticks to the different characters' limited knowledge allow for superstitious customs and beliefs to be accurately portrayed here

I find it interesting that most negative reviews on here share the notion that the stories seem too negative, unrelatable, and characters being unlikable, when this book is perhaps the rawest, down to earth depiction of late20th century China I have seen so far. This book does not come up with comical villains that plot evils, but simply tells stories that reflect how much suffering humans can cause among themselves.
