22% in. I almost DNF’d Shōgun around page 250 because the pacing was putting me to sleep, but now I’m hooked. An assassination attempt, shifting alliances, and Toranaga’s increasing isolation have made it clear that the balance of power is breaking down. The political intrigue is finally paying off, and it feels like a civil war is about to erupt at any moment.

It finally clicked. The slow setup is paying off as Toranaga and Ishido maneuver toward war through assassinations, deception, and politics. Blackthorne has become a fascinating pawn and every faction has its own competing agenda. Clavell somehow juggles countless subplots without losing the bigger picture. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the cast, the factions keep everyone organized. I can’t put it down now.
