I will say there is a purposeful effort to paint Rabbit as just that, an rabbit, but why? Why write a story from the POV of an animal that seeks safety and then a hole? Through this POV all we hear about is women as sexual conquest/gratification. It's other characters who have to remind Rabbit that people are human, and he actually seems to struggle with that concept.
