This book is crazy, I didnt expect a retelling of huck finn to hit so hard but it really does. Giving space for the horrific violence of chattel slavery means that the original story's odyssey-like life and death adventure plot points have a weight that mark twain never gave them. I think I read the original in middle school? Early high school? and this makes me feel like the book was very poorly contextualized.
