This is extremely well-written and brings the conflict to life, from the British point of view, so much so that while reading about the Somme, I had to put it down. Haig apparently thought it good military strategy to send thousands of his troops across no man's land to be caught in the German barbed wire and machine-gunned to death. Month after month, no change in strategy . . . no more reading for today.
