So far not too great. There are not worries for the reader concerning the characters. Kyra is a 15 year old who can defeat veteran knights with ease. She complains of the woes of being a woman but until this point in the book she gets what she wants. Merk and Alec are the only two with compelling motivations but have only had two chapters so far. They have real things to overcome!
