Every book has its own rhythm, and it usually takes several chapters to get in sync with a book (more if the setting or style is unfamiliar). I think I'm finally there, loping along at the slow pace of long days in the hot sun where the only prospect for tomorrow is more of the same mediocre biscuits and mild complaints. It's a pace of life where you study the moon's phases and speculate idly on the future.

(It's not exactly full of relatable female characters.) It's completely immersive, so you feel like you're on the cattle drive with nothing more than horse to ride on, a hat to protect you from the sun and rain, and a pistol just in case. There's no apps to predict the weather or detail the route, and especially no way to know who you'll meet next.
