Alejandra, James, and Dr. Q have made it to Stromboli. Nick finds himself in the company of a small black house cat and a fast-approaching winter. Between ten millennia, both the Centauri Team and our future-flung biologist weather uncertainty and an icy reception.
Notably, Ptolemy wasn’t mentioned until the end of ch20, and the next chapter for Nick is titled 11th Millenia AUCT rather than 10151 + 18yrs (est).

Things are heating up on Stromboli, I’ll-tempered witches and crows alike. Nick falters in remembering classics and wishing to embrace them presently. The narrative seems to be picking up for those in 12 AUCT and flickering with Nick’s resolve in 11,000 AUCT.

Another chunk down. Rosaria, a beacon of hope. Nick chokes down hallucinations at the cost of his fraying sanity.
I think the part of Nick who is fighting to keep the memories of who he was and his sense of self is quite sweet but also foolhardy. How can he be who he was 10,000 years ago? It’s impossible. We are not who we were even 10 years ago. Even 1 year ago.
We are meant to evolve in our own ways.

Nick’s dream of a close physical connection and the comfort it brings in his isolation, and of deciding to stop pushing out his memories of Natalie and let them comfort him and keep him company are very sweet. Love and tenderness and yearning are such innocent emotions amplified by our desires and dreams and wishes.
Alejandra’s harrowing tale, and her determination to cherish her found family, was also great.

Chapter 9 does something really special! It manages to capture three points in time in just a couple of pages. So seamless.

The clinical approach to a devastating situation has a lot of appeal. Humanity’s only chance is to stave off one’s emotions and an ever-present dread or end of everything. But how can we? We can’t let hope die or forget ourselves in the process either, or else what would the point be? Archaelogy must be the same - we want to study the past way of life, but it’s meaningless if you can’t live life yourself.

The pacing and writing of this book is really nice. I like the train of thought style, and both antagonists thoughtful narrations, written often in third person, intermesh well. One with nature, the other with terse but hopeful humanity. I think I’ll really like this book. It hits close to home.

The description of Ptolemy Quist by Alejandra rattled me. Her description of herself this chapter also gave me pause. This journal is a fun way to get to know the crew of Centauri Lab.

The book is interesting so far! The echoes of humanity drowned out by the resurgence of nature. One man awakes 10,000 years later to find almost nothing of what he once knew. Interestingly, I thought we’d get Natalie’s perspective but instead got Morgan Ochoa’s, a physician from the Centauri Lab. I know Natalie’s name from my friend, but I can’t remember the Biologists name. Three chapters in!
