Two consecutive stories about rapists, the second in particular could just as easily have been written by Cormac McCarthy, with a huge resonance of Child of God. Given the name of this collection, can this be coincidence?

This is much better than I hoped. Quality writing. Don’t judge a book … (actually, I like the cover. I mean more that the author sounded less of a prospect, but he writes with assurance and depth).

Scathing, occasionally a little esoteric (I still don’t know who all the classes of ne’er do well he lists are), and sometimes very funny. The back cover tells us Hines started writing while serving time for armed robbery. Three stories in, I know not to judge the book by that back cover.
