It sounds like an obvious thing to say but the world they live in makes this statement more moving I think.

I feel like lots of detailed background information on the characters is described in the book. Relatively much more than most movies. Is this typical of novels? I notice it more while reading this book.

I can feel what kind of person Tish is and how she feels in her relationships with Fonny's family.
