The stomach-turning depiction of White Atlanta continues to enlighten this person who lived in ATL for a long time and has read extensively on the topic. I am in Atlanta for an extended stay and have recommended the book to several people already.

This remains a great history of desegregation in Atlanta, but continues to not link this history to modern "conservatism". I am in Atlanta as I read this. I lived here for 16 years, and I talked to many Black and White Atlantans about this history over the years. I thought I had the story straight, but the actions of many, from Hartsfield to Rich's Department Store, were whitewashed in the history I learned.

It is chilling to read about Westminster and Lovett (private schools many of my son's friends and my friend's kids attended) refusing to integrate. My son's school was the first private school in ATL to integrate, admitting MLK's children shortly after opening in 1969. I found it depressing that this was a huge deal, still mentioned often in the mid-aughts when my son got there.

Kruse notes that John Steinbeck called the shouts and actions of parents who threw things at children integrating Southern US schools as "filthy, bestial, and degenerate." That works. I am seeing success in Krause's efforts to link this to the current segregationist mobs, the ones demanding an end to DEI, and those capitulating (most American businesses) to those filthy bestial degenerates.

Dry as dust, but edifying about white flight in Atlanta. It is shocking to read about the very public efforts to maintain racial lines in housing. Less successful is the attempt to portray this as a foundation for MAGA. We can point to popular movements throughout the world and through history using racism/xenophobia/class distinction to divide and conquer. I don't see this as different.

Finally linking this moment to MAGA. Appealing to poor white trash by messaging that they deserve more for being White and attacking education and effort feels very current. People with social standing and money telling PWT that the biggest impediment to their progress is Blacks forcing their way in (then mostly for lower-priced housing stock) and Jews (for being Jewish) sounds just like Trump nation.

I lived in Atlanta for a long time, and read a lot on the political history of Georgia, but I am learning things from this. It is a scholarly tome, not written for the casual reader, and tells a real story less polished than most.

The book is very academic (Princeton U Press, so no surprise) and dry. It can read like a textbook. But, it is packed with fascinating if revolting, history. It is chilling to read about the Atlanta Journal, which was my local paper for 15 years (though already merged at that time as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution), writing in its editorials about how decent white people would be unwilling to play on a golf course with black people, and that they would just defund all parks if black people were allowed in. Even more chilling, reading about the people who pushed for integration, noting that when sitting in front of the color line on the bus, they would not sit next to white people, and under no circumstances would they ever sit beside a white woman.

Oh wow, that sounds horrible indeed! Nick Land twists such events in "The Dark Enlightenment" to mean that white people have to flee certain areas to - you guessed it - maintain the integrity of their race. Argh, writing this infuriates me, Nick Land is so horrible, and I have to read even more of his crap for the paper I'm working on, arghhhh!!!!!!!!!!

How is White Power still a thing? The idea that there are people so lazy that they think what is best about them is the melanin level they were born with is astonishing and sad to me. Imagine if any of them actually exerted some effort to accomplish anything.

I spent all morning assembling biographies of people commemorated on Stolpersteinen in a certain area, some of them little children, others grandmothers - what are these White Power assholes thinking?!

With all the denial out there now it is good to have truth in front of people every day. Though I am Jewish, most of my forebearers were murdered by the Russians, Ukrainians, and Latvians, not Germans. (My grandmother lived in Riga until Jews were deported to a shtetl now part of Poland.) My SIL is very into genealogy, and she has done a great job finding family all over the place, particularly on my mother's side. I just found out a couple of weeks ago that one of those relatives, my grandmother's youngest brother, did die in a German camp, but as far as I know, he is the only one.

If I can try to help you find information on people from your family who were murdered in Nazi camps, please let me know, my colleague is a specialist who knows what archives exist where and whom we could ask!

Just a thought, you can create a "group" (private) with just the two of you and pretend you're reading something, but really just use it as a DM service. Interesting discussion, and Meike, I am always grateful to the German government when I've encountered these Stolpersteine in various cities....along with being sad at how many there are.
