I just read Appointment With Death before this story. I see distinct parallels with that book here. Instead of the dictatorial old lady in that book, Agatha creates here a controlling old man who finds entertainment by shocking his children, which is very similar to the theme in that previous book.

It’s tiring that Agatha always injects French when Hercule Poirot is thinking to himself, as if she expects that we all will be fluent in French.

Agatha Christie is a bit of a chauvinistic writer. Her women are either really beautiful or always ugly. That seems to be all she can say about them. Also, her families are all was really wealthy. Wouldn’t it be nice to once in a while have an ordinary family.
