"You know," Kan says, rolling the dice, taking a shard from the square and threading it amongst his hand, filling the gap with one of his previous shards, "I taught my sister how to play this game."

"She any good?" I ask, scattering the dice.

"Excellent."

I purse my lips, pick a shard, look at it. Set it straight back down. "Better than you?"

"Hasn't beaten me once," he mumbles, tossing down.

"I hate you,"

"No, you don't, Moonbeam. You love me. You're just too busy feasting on my heart to notice."

I scowl. "And what if I don't want to have this talk you speak of? Ever?"

He shrugs. "Then you'll have to kill me on your way out of Dohm. Simple as that. Otherwise, I'll be on your f*cking heels for the rest of eternity until you decide you're ready to face your past."

I physically recoil, like he jabbed me with a shiv and marginally missed a vital organ. "You're horrible."

His smile is soft. Gentle even.

But my hope is a flame that will never give out. Not when it comes to her. She could sink me to the bottom of the Loff, and I'd still burn like a sun.

I'd mulch her enemies with my bare hands to see those dimples. Or at the very least, pave a bloody path for her to slaughter them herself.

She shivers against me in the way she always did, deepening my grave with another shoveled scoop.

It's an effort not to groan. To break away and smash my fist into a wall until my knuckles bleed.

I should've let her walk away rather than pretending I'm okay with this.

But I'm weak.

Soft hearted.

... feeling like I'm standing in the path of an impending moonfall - too transfixed on its plummeting beauty to step to the side.

To save myself.

She spins into my arms this time - so close.

So unbearably far away.

It's tempting to accept this scrap she's offering. To lean in and embrace this "Goodbye to Elluin" Raeve seems to think I want.

Yet here I am again, standing stationary while Raeve dances around me with my soft heart in her f*cking hands, dripping blood all over the floor.

Kaan was inside, sitting at a stone table he'd set for us, the air flush with the smell of colk and canit root stew.

He told me this place was his gift to me but that he didn't have to come with it. That one word from me and he'd step out into the jungle and never return.

I was upon him before the sentence fully left his lips.

"Chase death, Moonbeam. And I pray your bloodlust brings you the same sense of peace I feel just knowing you exist."

I think you broke from Slátra's tombstone like a hatching dragon.

"You're f*cking mad," I hiss as my back collides with the moon.

"Am I?" He arches over me like a rocky overhang, leveling me with a look that sucks all the oxygen from my lungs. "Because I knew a female who died. Tragically. Whose lifeless body was sailed into the sky by the adoring beast at your back with my torn-out heart in her f*cking fist."

Isabella My eyes roll out of my head. "How conceited of you."

Just hopeful, Moonbeam. Ever hopeful."

I arch a brow in question.

"Unless you were playing Skripi with Slatra while you were balled up in the sky, I should have at least an eon on you." He shrugs. "I pray to the Creators that gives me the advantage I need to win."

I slay him with a stare while he lifts another shard, swapping something out, his features cast in stone as he spears me through a simmering gaze.

Your turn."

Right.
