Chapter 5 has really elevated both the innate and learned wrongfulness of the boys that has been present in the first few chapters. There’s an overwhelming sense of dread surrounding every action or word of theirs that’s equally hard to read as it is entrancing.

The thing that’s stuck me so far is how well Mishima allows the contradictions in character beliefs to flow. A lot of it is a sharp contrast between mainly the boys and the adults but also between the adults amongst themselves - especially when it comes to assumptions regarding their opinions about one another.
