Throughout the whole chapter he tries to go back to his childhood, his books, and his old life, but he realizes he can’t, and that hurts him even more than being at the front. The scene with his mother is especially sad because for a moment he doesn’t want to be a soldier anymore, he just wants to be her son and be comforted, but he can’t even tell her what he is really feeling ):
