His idea about the universe comprising a single universal truth sounds naive and reductionist in the 21 century. I feel like my opinion about this book depends on what I think of his dissertation, The Search for Truth. Alas I’ll probably never read it.

His extraordinary societal drop-out experiment is certainly interesting, even inspiring. But also strikes me as a privilege of a young person, unencumbered. The fact that he met so many like-minded individuals seems to signal as much about what was happening in the culture broadly as much as about what was happening with him individually.
