A decent start to the series - many of the later books are better. But he's just launching here, feeling his way for the first few books. He wanted a real ensemble, no one detective as the star of the show, so at this point even though Carella seems the main detective of the series, McBain was prepared to feature many detectives in the lead role through several books, and was originally willing to kill any of them off. Plans can change, though...
