There's an authorial voice McGuire takes in this book that bugs me. SHhe doesn't trust the reader to intuit things so she tells you. Here we have a kid, just 7, exhausted from a trip and being examined by a housekeeper and instead of letting us figure out from the clues she has laid out, she has to say, "in a kinder household she would be in bed, but this was not a kind household" (roughly). And there I am, annoyed.
