holy shit Eva is kinda cray cray she really set her own kid plum the youngest on fire hello? but at the same time I get her bc of boy boy like it’s all her trauma built up of past relationships with men who break her trust and end up killing themselves, similar thing happened with Tar Boy. also why tf would she name her daughter Eva so confusing but call her pearl, Hannah is me lol and sad that reukie died rip

Helene wright and her daughter nel take a trip to the south to visit Helene’s dying grandmother and the reality of being black in a segregated world really shows with the train encounter and having no bathrooms for people of color. They arrive too late to say goodbye to her grandma and instead they see Helene’s mom. Nel is changed by this trip and fearful of it. Helene is happy to return home. Nel meets sula.

starts off with beautiful descriptive writing about shadrack, a 20 year old soldier who goes through trauma in war and in the hospital/jail. he has severe ptsd and memory loss after and doesn’t remember who he is. my favorite part is when he looks at himself in the mirror and sees himself, giving him a sense of peace. he returns to medallion where he creates suicide day, when people kill themselves or others.
