"The Custom House" as the intro is called felt like padding and it was. I just read that Hawthorne worried The Scarlet Letter was too short for publication. So, he tacked on 50+ pages to lengthen it. Writers if you don't know already are worriers. Their skill can mask insecurities. This is an example. Start reading after those extra pages if your new to this great novel.

Now I remember reading this. The first 50 or so pages would cure insomnia in a lifelong sufferer. I'll persevere in hope of better things to come.
