Although Clarke makes it sound like the name Rama was basically just a matter running out of Roan and Grecian deities, authors are far more exact. According to Brittanica Rama is one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, considered the epitome of moral virtue and royal conduct.

I thought I had read this book already but I’m not certain. I do remember thinking that it was typical of Clark super alien race which barely acknowledges our existence bumped into us and then moves on. I will see whether or not this is still true. There are apparently three other books after this one but I only own the first.

I’d have forgotten that this book begins with a natural disaster. The destruction of a number of cities in Italy by a meteorite which then makes humanity set to try and never let that happen again. This explains the extraordinary scanning technology that is used later in the story.
