Reading Kundera in Prague is just right, though his characters could be in any of several former Communist countries. He holds them so extremely close that the geography plays little part in the story. We are in the same “rooms” as Mirek, Karel, Marqueta, and Eva. We look into their brains as they speak and proceed through their lives, step by step, navigating the narrow confines imposed by the communist regime.

In my third or fourth time in Prague, I find that its popularity with tourists makes it difficult to connect with the old Prague of Communist times. Even outside the old city (Stare Mesto), Prague is now full of tourists, from everywhere - lots of Americans, a lot of Asians (both Chinese and Japanese), Germans, French, Italians, Slavs (hard for me to distinguish whether Czech or other), and yes, Romanians.
