See and the reason why I always find it difficult to read stories that are set so far back is because why is domestic abuse so tolerated? Man, venerated as an esteemed doctor, hits women but still he is viewed as a “charmer” in the story.

She calls her husband a pathetic slob every two pages and is head over heels in love with an abusive doctor. Reading is supposed to provide me comfort but I do not see this happening anytime soon in this tale.
