The photo on the book cover is placed in a larger context of an often-memed-about 'end of history' that was swiftly swept away by the currents of history. Jäger describes such a context as 'postpolitics', with 'mass politics' being defined in Weberian terms while 'antipolitics' and the titular 'hyperpolitics' blur together in a post-2008 blur. Curiously, this chapter ends with a literary critique of late Houellebecq.

Was eying this for a hot minute, so I'm thankful that my book club picked it up.
Jäger opens the preface with invocations of Baudrillard's 'America', drawing a lineage from his diagnosis of political hysteresis in the 1980s to the current state of US politics. It is made clear that the nominal domestic peace afforded by its ascendancy to world hegemon no longer exists, with the 2024 election crystallizing this fact.
