Hall does something with repetition. There’s a lot of repetition within a sentence and a paragraph. For a while I thought I was misreading or rereading the same sentence but she must’ve done this intentionally. There’s a resistance against progress, moving on, indicative of the character of Stephen. The restlessness of our protagonist is very much present on the page. Very perturbing!

Christ this novel shall kill me!
(Spoiler below)
Page 444: “Jamie who dared not go home to Beedles for fear of shaming the woman she loved, Jamie who dared not openly mourn lest Barbara’s name be defiled through her mourning, Jamie had dared to go home to God — to trust herself to his more perfect mercy, even as Barbara had gone home before her.”
