The envoy-sci-fi subgenre is one of the greatest things ever created.

I can't believe this is the third book in a row that I'm reading that is about an ambassador, envoy or representative of sorts experiencing a wholly different kind of spacefaring culture to his own. (By complete accident by the way; I read Memory Called Empire and Player of Games just before this one...)
