Not me crying for the third time

^Alexander sought me through the happy crowd of family and friends, and I did not think I would ever grow used to it—the sight of him intent on me, eyes focused as if he had no greater aim than to be at my side.^

^”I only mean to say, she and I are more alike than you might think.”

“You and Miss Haythorne?” Disbelief was stark in his voice. “As alike as a butterfly and a cockroach.”

“Let us hope I am the butterfly in this comparison.”^

I thought she [Ginny] might squeal, throw her arms around me, laugh in delight. Instead, her eyes filled with tears.

“Oh, darling,” she whispered. “That is wonderful.”

My own eyes grew blurry. “It is, isn’t it?”^

“He would be a fool not to want that with you,” he said finally, softer than I’d ever heard him before. “A life of laughter sounds like a dream.”^

^”I always imagined that when I married, I would have a great brood of children to scurry underfoot, to make me laugh and fill my days. Assuming my husband wanted that also, of course.” I stopped suddenly, realizing how my words might have sounded to him. My cheeks filled with heat.

He said nothing for a long moment, his gaze moving to stare out the window.

^”I told him, ‘That woman is in love with you.’” She smiled softly. “And he said, ‘I do not think I will ever be so fortunate.’”

Heavens.^

Oh I love that line

You know, I kind of wish we had this level of formality. They used to have morning gowns, afternoon, and dinner gowns. Now it’s just sweatpants and sweaters 😔
