There is a terrific story about a man who disappeared suddenly from his settled successful happy life, that Sam tells Brigid, about Charles Flitcraft. Worth the price of the book and one of the very few parts of the book that isn’t part of the 1941 Bogart/Astor/Lorre/Greenstreet movie.
That movie version is superior to my mind’s eye version of the book. Very unusual. Read the book first in my view.

The very rare book where the movie maintains fidelity to the story. The 1941 Bogart Astor Lorre Greenstreet movie is better than your mind’s eye at bringing the characters to life.
