Overall it’s an ok book. It’s pleasant and it has an agenda to throw some light on queer life during the 50s, which is admirable. But I would prefer any book with some more story to tell. Again, audiobook narration is one of the worst. I like the little author’s note at the end. I would put this in the category of not great, but also not bad.

Andy’s character is surprising. He feels what he’s supposed to feel without inhibitions. That’s impressive if one can do that. The book attributes that to his privileges which Nick can’t imagine. That part felt realistic. Rest of the characters’ reactions felt unrealistic and overly optimistic. Maybe there wasn’t as much opposition before the gay rights movement pushed the right wing to become hostile

I have warmed up to this book. It’s a slow burn. And the characters are slowly developing. Still don’t have a good picture, but I think we are getting there. The narration of the audio book is the worst. Glad I’m also able to read. I am sensing the author is a little uncomfortable in sensual scenes. I wonder if it’s a straight woman.

The audio narration is one of the worst. The writing is just okay. Nothing really great about it. Story is set in the ‘50s, which is very intriguing. I haven’t read anything about queer culture from that era. So that’s what keeping me going. I had to double check many cultural references to be historically accurate, and they do hold up so far. I wish the writing is more interesting. Let’s see how it goes.
