ana stumbles into the red room where christian shows her the different sex toys she can use. they decide to experiment with being tied up, but not before giving each other head. they don’t do it in the red room as christian isn’t ready yet.

christian won’t tell ana what barney found on jack’s computer but that ana still has a job. ana asks christian about jose staying with her and it somehow turns into a conversation about elena (mrs robinson). christian reluctantly allows jose to stay with him, only if ana is there.

jack finds ana’s emails to christian, the attempts to make a move on her. ana is able to get away while he is cursing at her to find christian and taylor outside. she tells christian what happens and he makes some calls while taylor goes into the building. christian is furious that ana didn’t use her blackberry to communicate with him. jack walks out with a cardboard box, he probably got fired.

ana sleeps past her alarm and has 15 minutes before work. christian wants her to call out but she refuses. taylor drives her there and calls her ana for the first time, making her smile. jack isn’t happy with ana being late. jose calls ana while at work and they suggest meeting up.

christian tells ana a little bit of his nightmare, and says he’s serious about marrying her. ana wants to talk to dr flynn to understand his trauma more.

ana sees christian is having a nightmare and reassures him that she’s still here, relieving him. they start to get touchy with each other when his words from last night come back and ana tells him to stop, he he coerces her and they make love.

christian asks ana to marry him, she says she needs to think on it. christian suggests mac n cheese which he gets giddy about so ana agrees to have some. he tells ana that he bathed leila and gave her some of ana’s clothes which ana rightfully recoils over.

ana feels tears on christian’s face and feels bad. christian reveals he’s a sadist and likes to whip brunette girls because they remind him of his birth mom. ana is horrified and realizes that leila is right, that “master is dark”. christian says that her leaving him changed something. it was ok if he couldn’t do those things with ana and says he wants all of her.

ana begs christian not to do this and kneels on the ground in front of him begging christian to talk to her. eventually he says that he feels terrible that he may have something to do with the way leila is. ana reveals her insecurities to christian that he’s too good for her which he reassures that it’s the opposite. he takes ana’s hand and places it on his chest ana tries to move her hand away but he refuses.

As Ethan and Ana get drinks, Ana sees Christian carrying Leila with Taylor behind them. Ethan offers Ana a place to stay, but she insists on confronting Christian. Furious she didn't return home, Christian explains Leila has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital and swears nothing happened between them. When Ana recoils, he panics and, in a vulnerable moment, drops to his knees in submission before her.
