the part l don't understand is that the protagonist is portrayed as someone who is deeply sensitive to the suffering of others. he constantly criticizes people for their lack of empathy yet he shows none toward Charlotte. if he truly loves her enough to die for her why doesn't he care about the devastating impact his suicide will have on her? how can he inflict such suffering on the person he loves most?
