It’s interesting that this has retroactively been deemed DeLillo’s first “great” novel. Is it because of the chronological proximity to the sequence of White Noise through Underworld? The theme of language may be more mature than what DeLillo explored in Running Dog, but that book has so many of his obsessions and is paced better than The Names.
