We just get immediately into it oh wow
I didn’t think it would be acknowledged that they both feel something towards each other so early. I put two and two together during the bathtub scene and immediately understood. Winn does a great job of characterizing both Gaunt and Ellwood through their actions, early on as well: tender touches, whispers, looks. Both of them are very careful. Looking forward to this!!

From 0 to 100 under that tree omfg
My heart breaks for Gaunt :( I’m both happy and mad that Ellwood is there to at least be somewhat of a comfort for him, but the war is gonna absolutely tear through these boys and I can’t imagine how horrible it will be. These days in the village are there to lull me into a false sense of comfort and I’m not falling for it
3 years until the war ends….lest we forget…

The months being told through letters makes it simultaneously really easy to read and equal parts horrific. As Gaunt and Sandys’ story was being told, I couldn’t shake the lump in my throat for what I knew was coming. Gaunt’s letter to Ellwood after he was wounded made me tear up. The last sentence of Chapter 4 was a gut punch. God, PLEASE keep my boys safe. Please, please, please.
