reading realism, representation, and essentialism (lubiano) - one of my favorite creators (tiktok) mentioned how niggas must start with love when watching films (butchering his words badly) but i thought about that statement while reading lubiano's arguments that surely being up worthwhile discussion surrounding lee but ultimately explodes in my eyes due to the lack of love for cinema. more to say on this later...

bring up* | anyway lubiano says that lee and his work seal off rather more compelling (politically and formally) black filmmakers, but she fails to mention a single one or why any of their work is considered, in her eyes, working around "problematic realism" to dial in on important matters. my problems with this essay (and with many other reviewers and critics of film) is the refusal to engage with "black" film in any other context than political - "black films are inherently political - all films are political!" - yes i understand that and i do not disagree. i just think that all this jargon and bullshit written for scholars by scholars is far removed from any love for the world of cinema. it almost comes off as clinical. yes an essay can focus on a subject in a political lens but even with the sentiments i agree with - show me more!!! don't make the closing arguments your strongest. i don't give a damn how many times you niggas reference barthes or have 1k footnotes, help me understand your point more clearly. fawk
