Every frontline character seems to have a cook, servant, and other miscellaneous elements of servitude at their behest.
No wonder they have all this time for dramatic shenanigans.
When someone says, "Class is permanent", I see what they really mean
(Btw, "mean" is not a word to be offended by any stretch of the imagination).

A behemoth of a writing project, for sure.
I'm still not enthralled by the story or its main characters in any sense...I'll finish this as a challenge.

As the story winds down, one can see all prominent characters make an appearance in each chapter - no more segmentation of storylines.
Chatterji family couplets are nice and exquisite.
A slow grind of a tiring soap-opera thus far. And as I expected, all events seem to cover a one-year timeline. No multi-generational epic this...

Epic in detail for sure, even if not much else.
A train journey or bus ride described in all its humdrum details - I like it.

It is time for the Chatterji family and Calcutta to be in the spotlight.
I'm starting to think that a collection of short stories (by Indian authors) published in 1951 would be a better alternative to this novel set in 1951.
