Read the first chapter this morning, then tried to guess the publication date. Got it in one. Now it's possible that I had looked it up before and the year was still lodged in my subconscious, but also possible that this just has the most '78 vibes you can imagine. Panoramic LA novel with multiple characters drawn together by the antics of a mad freeway sniper. Pretty cool so far.

Oh man, that's been on my list forever. I always enjoy Kiefer Sutherland in a sinister role. But yeah, totally unrelated.
Dude, I think you'll find it pretty entertaining. I remember watching this with some buds back when we used to have our movie nights after work 20 years ago. I'd already seen it and I usually was the one recommending the weirder stuff, as you might expect. Brought my own DVD to the festivities and we had brews and wines and cheese and pizza or whatever and would watch a couple films and listen to cool albums. We were doing a lot of Flaming Lips and Phish and Wilco and stuff like that back then, lol.
Sounds like a blast. No surprise at all that you were bringing the weirdness. I think I actually may have seen the movie a very long time ago, but I've got to watch it again to jog my memory.
...Oh, so I've just discovered that this WAS turned into a movie called...yes...Freeway. But it's from '88. Not the Sutherland/Witherspoon film.
As discovered after reading this one myself, there's a similarly titled film adaptation from '89, from the director best known for 'new wave' adult films like Cafe Flesh and Nightdreams and starring Richard Belzer, Billy Drago, and To Live and Die in LA's Darlanne Fluegel in the lead role; the Letterboxd community thinks fairly highly of it.
Yeah, I just noticed it myself...3.1 on Letterboxd, not bad at all. Maybe I'll have a Freeway/Freeway double-feature sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation, Jordan; gonna re-read your review once I finish the book.

I was chuckling to myself, imagining you showing it to a big group.
