I was in the mood to reread this, an old favorite I read 35 years ago, because I wanted to be guaranteed a pleasurable reading experience. It finally became available at the library so I dove in. I’m happy to say that the first four chapters have proven themselves to be totally enjoyable. I don’t remember anything about the plot, just the feelings I had reading it, so I’ll be surprised along the way.

I’m loving every moment of it. It’s packed to the brim with some of the most authentically rendered, vividly human characters I’ve ever encountered in my reading journey. And McMurtry’s ease with omniscient third-person narration, with which he often shifts points of view several times a chapter — usually an approach that I find clumsy if not a bit irritating — is unparalleled.
